Alus News _ New York, United States – FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his admiration for the rapid development of Indonesian football after meeting with the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, in New York on Wednesday (September 24, 2025). The meeting focused on the continued collaboration between FIFA and Indonesia to advance the sport in the country.

Infantino hailed Indonesia as the country that has made the "biggest progress in the world in such a short time frame".

"I was honored and had the great pleasure to meet the President of Indonesia," said Infantino after the meeting. He described President Prabowo as a "great friend" and a "great friend of football," as well as "a man of his word, a man that does what he says".

Government and Erick Thohir's Role
The FIFA President specifically praised the efforts of the Indonesian government, including the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises and PSSI Chairman, Erick Thohir.

"What he has done in the Federation football, what he has done in the government, what he will be doing for the sport in Indonesia, is also a colleague of mine as a member of the International Olympic Committee," Infantino stated.

Gianni Infantino highlighted the role of the Indonesian government, which has done "incredible" work for Indonesian football, covering:
  • Girls and boys.
  • Youth and seniors.
  • Most importantly, for the passion and the heart of all the people.
According to Infantino, football is now "touching the hearts of the people, is touching the emotions of the people" in Indonesia.

FIFA’s Commitment to
Investment and Support
During the meeting, Infantino affirmed FIFA's commitment to continue supporting and investing in Indonesian football development.


"That's why I'm here. That's why we, FIFA, we will continue to support, to invest, to be part of Indonesia," he stressed. "We have an office in Jakarta and we are looking forward to continuing this fantastic collaboration."

This collaboration is expected to have a positive impact not only on Indonesia but also on "the whole of ASEAN, for Asia, but for the entire world".

Infantino also expressed his hope that Indonesia, now a country that "people are looking up to," will play a crucial role in FIFA’s efforts to "unite the world" through football.

Support for World Cup Qualification
Regarding the challenges facing the Indonesian National Team in the World Cup qualifiers, Infantino conveyed his support.

"Until some time ago, nobody would have even been dreaming that Indonesia would be playing two crucial matches for the qualification to the World Cup," he said. "I wish the best of luck to Indonesia... and we have to unite football."
