Leukocytes, better known as white blood cells, are a vital component of the human immune system. Unlike red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen, leukocytes have the primary mission of protecting the body against various threats of infection, foreign pathogens, bacteria, viruses, parasites, and even cancer cells.
Although their numbers are much smaller than red blood cells in the bloodstream, the presence of leukocytes is crucial in determining the body's physiological defense against disease. This article will thoroughly explore the definition of leukocytes, their different types, their specific roles in immunity, and a comprehensive medical conclusion.
1. What Are Leukocytes?
Leukocytes are blood cells produced in the bone marrow through a process called hematopoiesis, specifically myelopoiesis and lymphopoiesis. These white blood cells are colorless, possess a cell nucleus, and are capable of moving independently using amoeboid movement as well as diapedesis (the ability to squeeze through capillary walls to reach infected tissues).
Medically, the normal leukocyte count in healthy adults generally ranges between 4,000 and 11,000 cells per microliter (\mu L) of blood.
- Leukocytosis: A condition where the leukocyte count is above normal, which often indicates an acute infection, inflammation, physiological stress, or specific bone marrow disorders (such as leukemia).
- Leukopenia: A condition where the leukocyte count is below normal, making an individual more vulnerable to infections due to a weakened defense system.
2. Types of Leukocytes and Their Characteristics
Based on the presence or absence of granules in their cytoplasm and the shape of their cell nucleus, leukocytes are classified into two major groups: granulocytes and agranulocytes.
A. Granulocytes (Possessing Cytoplasmic Granules)
1. Neutrophils
- Proportion: 55% - 70% of total leukocytes (most abundant).
- Primary Function: Serving as the front line of defense against acute bacterial and fungal infections. Neutrophils operate via phagocytosis (engulfing and destroying microorganisms) and perish in the process, forming pus.
2. Eosinophils
- Proportion: 1% - 4% of total leukocytes.
- Primary Function: Actively involved in fighting parasitic infections (such as helminths/worms) and mediating allergic responses and asthma inflammation by releasing chemical substances from their granules.
3. Basophils
- Proportion: 0.5% - 1% of total leukocytes (least abundant).
- Primary Function: Release histamine (triggering blood vessel dilation and inflammatory responses) and heparin (preventing blood clotting at the infection site). Basophils play a significant role in hypersensitivity or severe allergic reactions.
B. Agranulocytes (Lacking Cytoplasmic Granules)
1. Lymphocytes
- Proportion: 20% - 40% of total leukocytes.
- Primary Function: Divided into T cells, B cells, and Natural Killer (NK) cells. Lymphocytes are responsible for adaptive (specific) immunity. B cells produce antibodies to fight specific antigens, while T cells directly attack body cells infected by viruses or cancer.
2. Monocytes
- Proportion: 2% - 8% of total leukocytes.
- Primary Function: The largest white blood cells by size. Monocytes circulate in the blood before migrating into body tissues to differentiate into macrophages. Their primary task is to clear dead cells, tissue debris, and present antigens to lymphocytes to trigger subsequent immune responses.
3. Duties and Primary Roles of Leukocytes in Immunity
The human immune system relies on leukocytes through multi-layered defense mechanisms:
- Non-Specific Defense (Innate Immunity): Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and monocytes/macrophages provide rapid and generalized responses to all kinds of foreign agents regardless of the pathogen type through phagocytosis and inflammation.
- Specific Defense (Adaptive Immunity): Lymphocytes recognize specific antigens from invading pathogens, destroy them, and establish "immunological memory." If the same pathogen attacks again in the future, the body can respond much faster and stronger.
- Oncological Surveillance: Natural Killer (NK) cells act as sentinels that detect and destroy body cells undergoing malignant mutations or transforming into cancer cells.

Leukocytes, or white blood cells, play an essential role as the body's primary defensive fortress against various pathogenic microorganisms, foreign substances, and abnormal cells.
