Based on medical science and clinical nutrition, the human body requires various macronutrients and micronutrients in harmonious proportions to carry out physiological functions, metabolism, immune defense, and cell regeneration optimally.
1. What is Balanced Nutrition?
A balanced diet is the daily composition of food containing nutrients in types and amounts that match the body's needs. This principle pays attention to food diversification, physical activity, clean living behavior, and maintaining a normal body weight.
In modern medical and health guidelines (such as the MyPlate standard or Ministry of Health dietary guidelines), a meal portion in a single serving is divided proportionally:
- One-third of the plate: Staple foods (complex carbohydrates).
- One-third of the plate: Vegetables (sources of fiber, vitamins, and minerals).
- One-sixth of the plate: Side dishes (animal and plant-based proteins).
- One-sixth of the plate: Fresh fruits.
2. Main Components of Nutrients Needed by the Body
To function optimally, the body requires two major groups of nutrients:
A. Macronutrients

- Carbohydrates: The primary energy source for the central nervous system and muscles. Choose complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, oatmeal, tubers, and whole-wheat bread which are rich in fiber to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
- Protein: Essential for the formation of cell structures, enzymes, antibodies, and hormones. Proteins are divided into animal proteins (fish, eggs, lean meat, poultry) and plant proteins (tempeh, tofu, legumes).
- Fats: Needed as energy reserves, protection for vital organs, absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), and the formation of cell membranes. Prioritize healthy fats such as unsaturated fatty acids (Omega-3 and Omega-6) found in fatty fish, avocados, and olive oil.
B. Micronutrients
Nutrients needed in smaller amounts but are vital for the body's biochemical processes:
- Vitamins: Support immune function, blood clotting, vision, and energy metabolism (e.g., Vitamins A, B complex, C, D, E, and K).
- Minerals: Important for bone strength, muscle function, and fluid-electrolyte balance (e.g., Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Magnesium, and Potassium).
- Water: The largest component of the human body (about 60% of total body weight) which functions as a solvent, body temperature regulator, and nutrient transport medium.
3. Medical Benefits of Balanced Nutrition for Health
Implementing a balanced nutritional diet provides significant clinical impacts on the body's organ systems, including:
- Optimization of the Immune System: Adequate intake of vitamins C, D, Zinc, and protein strengthens adaptive and innate immune responses, making the body more resilient against pathogen infections (bacteria and viruses).
- Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs): Balanced nutrition prevents obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, which are major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease, stroke) and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- Support for Cognitive Function and Mental Health: The brain requires stable glucose, essential fatty acids (such as Omega-3), and B-complex vitamins to maintain concentration, memory, and prevent cognitive decline with age.
- Bone and Joint Health: A combination of calcium, vitamin D, and adequate protein prevents osteoporosis and maintains muscle strength and physical mobility.
- Cell Rejuvenation and Regeneration: Protein and antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E) help repair cells damaged by free radicals and the premature aging process.
