An allergy is an overactive immune system response to a foreign substance that is generally harmless to most people. These foreign substances that trigger allergic reactions are known as allergens. When a person with an allergy is exposed to an allergen, their body perceives it as a dangerous threat, prompting the immune system to produce specialized antibodies to fight it off and expel it from the body.

1. Common Types of Allergens
Allergens can be found all around us. Based on how they enter the body, allergens are generally grouped into several main categories:
  • Airborne Allergens (Inhalants): Pollen, house dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander.
  • Food Allergens: Cow's milk, eggs, peanuts, shellfish, soy, and wheat.
  • Insect Sting Allergens: Venom from bee, wasp, or fire ant stings.
  • Medication Allergens: Antibiotics (such as penicillin) and certain anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Contact Allergens (Skin): Nickel (found in jewelry or watches), latex, and chemical additives in cosmetics or detergents.
2. How the Body Reacts (The Medical Mechanism of Allergies)
The process of an allergic reaction involves a complex series of immune responses divided into two main stages:
  • Sensitization Phase (First Exposure): When the body is first exposed to an allergen, immune cells produce large quantities of an antibody called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). These IgE antibodies then attach themselves to mast cells in body tissues and basophils in the blood. At this stage, no clinical symptoms appear.
  • Reaction Phase (Subsequent Exposures): When the body is exposed to the same allergen again, the allergen binds directly to the IgE antibodies already anchored to the mast cells and basophils. This binding triggers degranulation, which is the release of active chemical mediators—most notably histamine—into the bloodstream.
The release of histamine triggers various characteristic clinical symptoms of allergies, such as blood vessel dilation (vasodilation), increased mucus production, tissue swelling, and contraction of smooth muscles in the respiratory tract.

3. Clinical Symptoms of Allergies
The clinical manifestations or symptoms of allergies vary widely, ranging from mild discomfort to a life-threatening emergency known as anaphylaxis:
  • Respiratory Tract: Sneezing, stuffy or runny nose (allergic rhinitis), coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing (asthma).
  • Skin: Itching, redness, hives (urticaria), and swelling of the eyelids or lips (angioedema).
  • Eyes: Red, watery, and itchy eyes.
  • Digestive System: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, or diarrhea (typically caused by food allergies).
  • Anaphylaxis: A severe, systemic reaction characterized by a drastic drop in blood pressure, constriction of airways, dizziness, and fainting. This condition requires immediate emergency medical intervention.
