In terms of volume, blood plasma accounts for the largest portion of total human blood, making up about 55%. The remaining 45% consists of red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). Plasma is vital because it serves as the primary transport medium for the entire circulatory system.

Main Components of Blood Plasma
Blood plasma is not just water; it is an aqueous solution rich in organic and inorganic substances. Its components can be broken down as follows:

    • Fibrinogen: An essential protein that triggers blood clotting to prevent excessive bleeding.

  • Metabolic Waste Products: Includes urea, uric acid, and carbon dioxide, which are transported to excretory organs such as the kidneys and lungs.
  • Hormones and Respiratory Gases: Transports chemical messengers (hormones) as well as dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Vital Functions of Blood Plasma in the Body
Without normally functioning blood plasma, the body's internal homeostasis would collapse. The crucial roles of blood plasma include:
